  History

Judy Bergsma, a dedicated Sunday School Teacher from Kentwood, MI, well known for her engaging, expressive reading style, took her love for children, story and literature and founded WKTV’s award winning TV series The Reading Train. In 1997 Judy launched her incredibly successful pilot episode, filmed in front of a live studio audience, comprised of family and friends. The pilot captured the attention of viewers and soon expanded into a school district wide “Name this Show” contest. From 1997 through 2011, over 11,000 elementary school age children, through school field trips, have made their broadcast appearance on WKTV’s premier children’s program The Reading Train.

The Reading Train’s popularity exploded as the years progressed further capturing the hearts and attention of numerous authors and other special guests. These honored guests have included: Patricia Polacco, Crystal Bowman, Diane Blain, Kevin Kammerand, Shirley Neitzel, Kent District Librarians, Paws with a Cause, Authentic Bagpipers, Beekeepers, Civil War Re-enactors, Storytellers from Story Spinners of Grand Rapids, Staff from Frederick Meijer Gardens and Blandford Nature Center, as well as others.

Reading Train enthusiasts are all extending an extra special thank you, in honor and appreciation to Judy Bergsma, founder and former Producer of WKTV’s Award Winning, Public Access, children’s TV show The Reading Train! Without Judy’s dedication, time, vision and inspiration, we would not be here celebrating our upcoming season. Judy, we love you and we will miss you! Best of wishes in your new story filled adventures!

Thank you Reading Train supporters for helping us in continuing our mission to ignite children’s passion for reading, to engage their love of story and to establish the importance of foundational reading habits.

Hello and Welcome to The Reading Train 2012! Toot! Toot!
